Isotope Explorer user's manual

Transfer and installation
The program is freely available for downloading on the
World Wide Web at the following URLs:
- Isotopes Project, Berkeley Lab
-
http://isotopes.lbl.gov/isotopes/install.html
- Lund Nuclear Data Service, Sweden
-
http://www.fysik.lu.se/nucleardata/isoexpl/isoexpl.htm
Follow the installation instructions on the download page carefully.
Since the program is a 32 bit application,
you may also need to download and install the WIN32S extension
if you run Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11. It should,
however, be pointed out that the program is much more stable
under Windows 95 and Windows NT, since these operating systems
are very much superior to the older versions of Windows.
In addition, Isotope Explorer needs the Borland DLL
library (BWCC32.DLL) which is also available at these sites.
BWCC32.DLL should be stored in the same directory as Isotope Explorer.
Data transfer via the Internet
If the Berkeley database is to be used, the following
actions have to be performed the first time the program is run:
- Nuclear data
- Check that the network is operational (e.g. run Netscape Navigator)
- Make sure that Configuration, Nuclear data source, Internet database
is selected
- Select File, Select Nucleus
- The program will now automatically transfer the nuclide
index file CATALOG0.LOG, and you should be able to transfer data
for any nucleus
- Authors search in NSR
- Check that the network is operational (e.g. run Netscape Navigator)
- Make sure that Configuration, Reference data source, Internet database
is selected
- Select File, Get Reference
- Click the Author button
- The program will now automatically transfer the authors
list file AUTHORS0.LIS (approximately 700 kbyte)
- When AUTHORS0.LIS has been transferred, the program automatically
builds the authors index file AUTHORS0.DIC
Note!
In order to make sure that you always have up-to-date index files, you should
periodically delete the files CATALOG0.LOG, AUTHORS0.LIS and AUTHORS0.DIC, and reinstall
them with the procedure described in this section.
Local database
If a local database (hard disk or CD-ROM) is to be used, the following actions have
to be performed the first time the program is run:
- Nuclear data
- Select Configuration, Nuclear data source, Local database
- The program will now ask for the location of the nuclide
index file CATALOG.LOG. On the TOI CD-ROM this file
is in the PCENSDF directory. Localize the file and select Open
- Authors search in NSR
- Select Configuration, Reference data source, Local database
- The program will now ask for the location of the authors
list file AUTHORS.LIS. On the TOI CD-ROM this file
is in the NSR directory. Localize the file and select Open
Helper application for a Web browser
If the program is to be used as a helper application
for Netscape or Mosaic, the browser should
be configured for this. Follow the instructions of your browser.
The MIME type/subtype is Application/ENSDF.
Isotope Explorer files
This is the recommended file structure for a Isotope Explorer installation:
- Program directory, \ISOEXPL\
- AUTHORS0.LIS
- Authors list for the NSR (downloaded
via HTTP if needed)
- AUTHORS0.DIC
- Author index for the NSR (created when AUTHORS0.LIS
has been transferred)
- BWCC32.DLL
- Borland resource library (from installation)
- CATALOG0.LOG
- Index file for the Isotopes Project ENSDF databases (downloaded
via HTTP if needed)
- LOG.
- Log file (for debugging). Created if debug mode is on
- TESTDATA.ENX
- Test data sets (from installation)
- ISOEXPL.EXE
- Isotope Explorer program (from installation)
- ISOEXPL.HLP
- Isotope Explorer Help function (from installation)
- ISOEXPL.INI
- Configuration file for Isotope Explorer (created the first time the
program is run)
- WSERRORS.TXT
- Network error messages
- Download directory, \ISOEXPL\DATA\
- Downloaded ENSDF data files
- ENSDF data directory (on TOI CD ROM or hard disk)
- CATALOG.LOG
- Index file for the Isotopes Project databases
- ENSDF files in different folders
- NSR directory (on TOI CD ROM or hard disk)
- AUTHORS.LIS
- Authors list for the NSR
- AUTHORS.DIC
- Author index for the NSR
- For each year 19YY:
- NSRYY.REF
