The European Physical Journal

Towards Europe In Scientific Publication

In response to the wishes of the physics community, the publishers of Journal de Physique (Éditions de Physique) and Zeitschrift für Physik (Springer-Verlag) have agreed to a merging of these two journals. Both journals have a centennial tradition. The united journal, comprising Journal dePhysique and Zeitschrift für Physik will continue the long traditionunder a new name "The European Physical Journal" (EPJ) whichwill represent the future of science with an increased cooperation amongEuropean and non-European scientists.

EPJ will be published in cooperation with the French Physical Society. It is a journal open to original contributions in all fields of Physics and to the world-wide community of physicists.

The first issues of The European Physical Journal will appear in January 1998.

There will be four sections of EPJ for basic science; two of them EPJ B and EPJ D succeeding JP I, II and ZPhys B, D with a rearranged and enlarged catalogue of subfields. The other two are a continuation of ZPhys A and C.

Furthermore, also EPJdirectis part of The European Physical Journal. It is an electronic-only,peer-reviewed journal covering fundamental physics from all fields of research.

EPJ A:

  • Nuclear Structure and Reactions
  • Heavy Ion Physics
  • Hadron Physics
  • Astrophysics
  • Nuclear Solid State Physics

EPJ B:

  • Condensed Matter
  • Soft Condensed Matter
  • Statistical Physics
  • Mesoscopic Physics
  • Physical Mechanics and Hydrodynamics
  • General and Interdisciplinary Physics

EPJ C:

  • Lepton-nucleon and Hadron-hadron Scattering
  • High Energy Nuclear Reactions
  • Standard Model
  • QCD
  • Soft hadron Physics
  • Lattice Field Theory
  • Quantum Field Theory

EPJ D:

  • Atom Physics
  • Chemical Physics
  • Clusters and Nanostructures
  • Nonlinear Physics
  • Quantum Optics
  • Molecules

The merging of these two journals will concentrate and improve publishing while avoiding further proliferation of publishing activities which neither individuals' nor libraries' budgets can follow. Subscription rates will be lower than the sum of JP and ZPhys.

We are convinced that EPJ will constitute the nucleus for a further merging of other national physics journals so as to strengthen European publishing. It will thusreflect the political and economical process towards European's unity and atthe same time broaden the community which reads and publishes in a wellrecognized European journal.

EPJ will maintain the idea of divisional editors which has proved to be very successful in editing JP and ZPhys. Hence, authors will be able to submit their manuscripts through different channels, either, through the editorial offices, to the Editors in Chief or directly to any of the members listed on the Editorial Boards.
